About the Necklift Procedure
The Procedure
A neck lift is a surgical intervention aimed at rejuvenating the neck and lower face. The procedure typically involves two primary techniques: cervicoplasty to remove excess skin and platysmaplasty to tighten the underlying platysma muscle. Incisions are strategically placed—either under the chin for cervicoplasty or extending from the front of the earlobe, around the ear, and behind the ear to the hairline for platysmaplasty—to conceal scars within natural facial contours. The surgeon lifts and repositions the skin, removes excess tissue, and secures the muscles with dissolvable sutures. Liposuction may be added to eliminate localized fat deposits, improving the neck’s smoothness and definition. The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia and takes two to four hours. It is typically an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day.
Recovery
After your neck lift, you’ll be monitored in the recovery area before being sent home. You’ll be prescribed pain medication to manage discomfort, and your neck will be wrapped in a compression garment to reduce swelling. Bruising and swelling are common and typically peak within the first ten days. To aid recovery, elevate your head for at least 48 hours and apply cold compresses to minimize swelling. Avoid twisting or turning your neck for the first two days, and have a support person available to assist with daily tasks. Most patients can return to work after two weeks, although strenuous activity—including exercise—should be avoided for four to six weeks. Scarring initially appears pink or brown but fades significantly over the first year. The final results become fully visible after several months of healing.
Risks
As with any surgical procedure, a neck lift carries certain risks. These include scarring, excessive bleeding, hematoma, tissue death, blood clots, numbness, intense itching, skin discoloration, and persistent swelling. A rare but serious risk is damage to the facial nerve, which could result in temporary or permanent muscle paralysis.
